The attack on the unnamed 6th grader took place at P.S. 89, known as the Williamsbridge School in the Bronx, on November 19, just days after a wave of terrorist attacks in Paris took lives of 130 people, Inside Edition reported.

Two sixth grade boys reportedly placed the Muslim girl in a headlock and attempted to tear off her hijab. A school source told IE the boys called their classmate "ISIS" while they beat her up.

Someone called 911 immediately after the incident, but after police arrived, local law enforcement didn't consider it worthy of a police report.

The boys were expected to appear at a disciplinary hearing just after the attack, but it was delayed to let families hire a lawyer to protect them, the source said.

Muslim community leaders were outraged, but not surprised by the story.

"Unfortunately young Muslims have been experiencing this for quite some time," Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) spokesperson Corey Saylor told IE.

"Since August of last year… we've seen a cycle of Islamophobia that's had a much more violent tinge to it than we've seen in many, many years," he added, saying the attacks in Paris and San Bernardino seem to have reinvigorated the frequency of such incidents.

The principal of the school refused to comment on the case.

"We are committed to promoting safe and supportive environments and a community of inclusion in all DOE schools," a Department of Education source told Inside Edition.
