RIO DE JANEIRO (Sputnik) — Venezuela’s Democratic Unity Roundtable (MUD) opposition coalition received 99 of the 167 seats in the national parliament after its election victory on Sunday, thus defeating President Nicolas Maduro’s United Socialist Party of Venezuela that obtained only 46 seats.
"The hard results of the elections in Venezuela last night can only be explained as a direct consequence of the imperialist counter-offensive led by the elites of Venezuela," Jose Reinaldo Carvalho said.
He added that the economic war led by "the imperialist circles" in the country via systematic withdrawal of the consumer goods from the market, turned the voters against the Venezuelan government.
Carvalho stressed that despite the "difficult situation" in the neighboring country, Sunday's defeat of the leftist forces in Venezuela was "only temporary" because, in his opinion, "the achievements of the Bolivarian Revolution cannot be forgotten overnight."
The newly formed Venezuela’s National Assembly is set to commence work in January 2016.
