BRUSSELS (Sputnik) — The results of the parliamentary elections in Venezuela are "a vote for change," calling for political efforts to tackle the issues ahead, EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini said in a statement Monday.
"The people of Venezuela have peacefully elected a new National Assembly. The ballot cast by the voters is a vote for change and a clear call on all political actors and institutions in Venezuela to engage in constructive political efforts to address together the challenges ahead, for the benefit of the Country and of all its citizens," the statement reads.
On Sunday, Venezuela held National Assembly elections.
Venezuela’s Democratic Unity Roundtable (MUD) opposition coalition received at least 99 of the 167 seats in the national parliament after its election victory, thus defeating President Nicolas Maduro’s United Socialist Party of Venezuela.
The newly formed National Assembly is set to commence work in January 2016.
