PARIS (Sputnik) — The endevour of the draft Paris climate change accord to keep global warming below 1.5 degrees Celsius lacks the clear plan of how to achieve this, Greenpeace International Executive Director Kumi Naidoo said Saturday.
"There's much in the text that has been diluted and polluted by the people who despoil our planet, but it contains a new imperative to limit temperature rises to 1.5 degrees. Now comes the great task of this century. How do we meet this new goal? The measures outlined in Paris simply do not get us there," Naidoo said.
According to Naidoo, the deal does not do enough to change that.
The published climate change draft text calls on 195 nations to hold the increase of global average temperatures to "well below" 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. The text urges signatories to "pursue efforts" to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius.
