The US did not specify how long the German contingent should be extended, German magazine Spiegel reported.
However, the German government was surprised by such kind of appeals and has not yet responded to the letter.
German media mentioned that the US is “exerting pressure” on Germany and that it is yet not clear how Germany will react. According to Spiegel, Washington is now also sending appeals to other coalition partners in order to force them to increase their military involvement in airstrikes in Syria and Iraq.
On Friday, the German Bundestag approved the deployment of Bundeswehr forces in Syria to fight against ISIL (also known as Daesh) terrorists. The mission is expected to last until December 31, 2016.
Germany announced that it would deploy six Tornado reconnaissance planes, a tanker aircraft and a frigate for a non-combat mission. According to German media, the first Bundeswehr “Tornado” jets had made their way to Incirlik military base in Turkey on Thursday.
