STOCKHOLM (Sputnik) — The men were formally charged with the killings that took place in 2013 by the Swedish authorities, on November 26.
"The two men — 32 and 30 years old — accused of terrorist offenses in connection with two murders in Syria in 2013, today were sentenced to life imprisonment by Gothenburg District Court," the statement reads.
It was noted in the statement that the men's participation in the public beheadings was captured on video.
According to various estimates, there are some 20,000 to 30,000 foreign fighters in the Islamic State (IS, or Daesh in Arabic) militant group's ranks in Syria and Iraq. The extremist group, which is outlawed in many countries, including Russia and the United States, has gained notoriety for its cruel tactics, including public beheadings and stonings.
