ROME (Sputnik) – According to La Stampa, the 24-hour strike will gather over 200,000 medical employees, including hospital and family doctors, pediatricians and veterinary surgeons.
Due to the strike, the residents of the Apennines will not be able to get about 2 million of medical services, in particular, a visit to a doctor or tests. Moreover, 40,000 planned surgeries will be postponed, however, in cases of emergency, medical care is guaranteed, the newspaper said.
The decision to hold the strike was made to protest against the "indifference of the government to the problems of public health," as well as to call for respect toward the profession’s dignity, the trade unions claimed.
It is expected that a protest of doctors could be repeated in the beginning of 2016, since one more health workers’ union is due to announce a two-day strike in January.
