"The United States calls on the government of Nigeria to quickly, credibly and transparently investigate these events in Zaria and hold to account any individuals found to have committed crimes," the statement noted.
On December 12, the Nigerian Army clashed with the Islamic Movement of Nigeria in Zaria, which resulted in multiple civilian deaths, according to the statement.
It is "essential" that the two sides refrain from actions that further destabilize the situation, the US Embassy underscored.
Local media reported the alleged reason for the violence was a protest by the Muslim group, which led to an attack on a Nigerian general’s car. Following the incident, the military attacked the protesters, allegedly killing hundreds of people, according to media reports.
