MADRID (Sputnik) – The party gained 124 out of 266 seats in the upper house. Another 58 members of the Senate are appointed by the regional legislatures, according to the Spanish law.
People's Party's traditional rival Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party (PSOE) secured 47 seats. Left-wing Podemos came third, gaining 16 seats. Other six parties gained six or fewer seats each.
People’s Party won the Sunday general elections, but failed to gain majority in the lower house, the so-called Congress of Deputies.
The majority of seats in the Senate grants the ruling party a right to block the lower house’s decisions.
