Israel and Russia have a coordination mechanism to prevent air incidents, Israeli Ambassador to Russia Zvi Heifetz said Tuesday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — In late November, Israeli Defense Minister Moshe Yaalon said that an aircraft of the Russian Aerospace Forces task unit deployed to Syria had entered by mistake the Israeli-controlled airspace over Golan Heights and left it. According to Yaalon, a communication channel established between the military of the two countries was involved to settle the issue.

"There is total understanding between Israel and Russia, and Russia perfectly understands our interests. There is coordination and trust between our leadership and armies, in order to avoid any incidents," Zvi Heifetz told RIA Novosti.

Commenting on Russian S-400 air defense systems' deployment to Syria, Heifetz expressed confidence that Russia took into account Israeli main concerns.

"The deployment of the air defense systems is one of the measures that Russia has taken, but we are not dealing with operational issues, the Russian army is present there and it takes those decisions, which are required," the diplomat said.

On November 24, Turkey shot down a Russian Su-24 warplane in Syria, having claimed it had violated Turkey's air space. Russian President Vladimir Putin described the Turkish attack as a "stab in the back" carried out by "accomplices of terrorists."  Both the Russian General Staff and the Syrian Air Defense Command have confirmed that the Russian jet never entered Turkish airspace.

Following the incident, Russia moved S-400 surface-to-air missile defense systems to Syria to protect its air assets.

Russia has been conducting airstrikes against terrorist positions in war torn Syria since September 30, following a request from Syrian President Bashar Assad.
