MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Asked why Washington was so keen on keeping the United Kingdom in the 28-nation bloc, Chizhov told reporters that Britain was the United States’ "inside man."
"They need it [UK inside EU] to promote their common Anglo-American policy toward Continental Europe," the ambassador said. "To offset Germany and France, the US needs that the UK stay inside the EU, rather than overboard."
Britain is due to vote on whether it should stay or exit the European Union before the end of 2017. US President Barack Obama has repeatedly called for UK’s continued membership in the union whereby, he said, it would give greater strength to the transatlantic union.
