Between Sunday and Monday, suspected militants of the Boko Haram extremist group carried out several gun and bomb attacks in the neighbouring state of Borno. According to media reports, the attacks in the city of Maiduguri killed over 30 people and injured more than 100.
Northeastern Nigeria has been mired in a conflict since 2009, when Boko Haram began large-scale attacks in the region, seeking to impose strict Sharia law.
