MOSCOW (Sputnik) – The World Health Organization (WHO) declared the end of Ebola virus transmission in Guinea on Tuesday.
“WHO commends the Government of Guinea and its people on the significant achievement of ending its Ebola outbreak. We must render homage to the Government and people of Guinea who, in adversity, have shown extraordinary leadership in fighting the epidemic,” Mohamed Belhocine, WHO Representative in Guinea, said as quoted in the statement.
Belhocine added that the organization would continue to provide assistance to the country "during the next 90 days of heightened surveillance."
Sierra Leone was declared free from Ebola in early November. In Liberia, a 15-year-old boy died from the virus in November, although the country was twice proclaimed cleared from the infection.
