Russia Against Exclusion of Kurds From Syria Talks - Deputy FM
Rojava, a Kurdish region in northern Syria, consists of three cantons Jazira, Kobani and Afrin. It is controlled by the Kurdish Democratic Union Party (PYD). The largest canton of Syrian Kurdistan is considered to be Jazira with the capital city of Qamishli.

A Sputnik Turkiye correspondent spoke with the Deputy Co-Chairman of the Canton of Jazira, Azam Hussain.

Hussain said that the situation in matters of security and defense has generally improved.

Talking about the presence of Daesh militants in the region, Hussain said, “In our canton there are sometimes clashes between the troops of the Union of the Democratic Forces of Syria and militants of Daesh (Islamic State). But the major part of the territory in the province of Hasakah has been cleared of jihadists. Recently, the soldiers of the Democratic Forces of Syria drove the militants from the area of Hol in Hasakah. Presently, there are clashes in the area of Sheddadi,” Hussain said during the interview.

According to the deputy chairman, in the canton there are people of various nationalities living side by side, the Kurds, Arabs, and Assyrians. They occupy leadership positions within the canton.

Talking about the Russian anti-terrorist campaign, Hussain said, “We believe that the Russian air strikes on militant positions of Daesh are very important in the fight against terrorism. Russia defends the Syrian people. We very much hope that in the future our relations with Russia will develop more actively and that there will be more opportunities for cooperation.”
