MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The Russian Agriculture Ministry is set to consider a proposal to destroy Turkish imports once the ban on them comes into effect in Russia on January 1, 2016, agricultural watchdog Rosselkhoznadzor said in a statement on Wednesday.

"The Federal Service for Veterinary and Phytosanitary Surveillance [Rosselkhoznadzor] has sent a proposal to Russia's Ministry of Agriculture concerning the destruction of the Turkish products due to be banned from being imported to Russia, starting from January 1," the statement reads.

On December 1, Rosselkhoznadzor announced that it might destroy agricultural products illegally imported from Turkey after January 1, 2016.

On November 28, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree on economic measures against Ankara in retaliation for Turkey's downing of a Russian Su-24 attack aircraft. The decree, which enters into force on January 1, 2016, includes a food import ban on certain categories of products.

In particular, the list of banned food products includes fruits, vegetables, and most poultry products.
