MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Newly appointed adviser to Russian President Vladimir Putin on internet matters, Herman Klimenko, said Monday that he considers implementation of measures aimed at global network development a top priority.
Earlier on Monday, Putin signed a decree appointing head of the Institute for Development of the Internet (IRI) Klimenko his adviser.
"The main task is to help effectively implement what we have proposed in the 'roadmap' program for the development of the Internet," Klimenko told RIA Novosti.
In December, Putin said that Russia should use the benefits provided by the Internet and online services as a "driver" for the country's development. According to the president, Internet-related business is estimated to account for 16 percent of Russia's gross domestic product.
