WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Obama made the statement following a meeting with US Attorney General Loretta Lynch earlier on Monday. The president added the received recommendations on gun control are well within his legal authority and will potentially “save lives.”
“I’m also confident that the recommendations that are being made by my team here are ones that are entirely consistent with the Second Amendment and people’s lawful right to bear arms,” Obama stated.
Obama is expected to announce executive action on gun control on Tuesday, according to media reports.
The president has repeatedly called for legislative action to impose more rigorous background checks on gun owners, among other measures. In recent months he has also called for actions to prevent individuals on the terrorist watch list from obtaining firearms.
Earlier on Monday, House Speaker Paul Ryan said Obama’s proposed executive action on gun ownership violates the constitutional rights of US citizens.
The Second Amendment to the US Constitution guarantees the right of Americans to keep and bear arms.
