RIGA (Sputnik) — The nomination comes as outgoing Prime Minister Laimdota Straujuma, who continues to run the government until a new Cabinet has been approved, resigned in December 2015 over disagreements within her coalition government. The coalition parties failed to present their own nominees by the end of 2015.
On Wednesday, the president met with the two candidates from the ruling coalition for the post of prime minister — Kucinskis, a prominent Latvian lawmaker, and former Minister of Education and Science Karlis Shadurskis.
Kucinskis is a Latvian political veteran who previously served as the country's minister of the environment and regional development.
