Three Americans have been kidnapped in Iraq's Baghdad, Al Arabiya news channel reported on Sunday. An anonymous official from US State Department said that US government is aware of the reports and is working to find them.
"We are aware of reports that American citizens are missing in Iraq," the State Department official was quoted as saying by Reuters. "We are working with the full cooperation of the Iraqi authorities to locate and recover the individuals," the source stressed.
It has been reported that the people missing were American contractors. A security official in Baghdad said that a company had filed a report about three of its staff going missing two days before, CNN reported.
The situation in Iraq, which has been in a state of turmoil for years, has worsened in 2015, triggered mainly by the activities of Islamist militants such as Daesh, which is prohibited in many countries, including the United States and Russia.
