BERLIN (Sputnik) — The international community should help UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura in organizing intra-Syrian negotiations, German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier said Saturday.
"Now, we are in need of international efforts to help UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura to overcome the last obstacles [to the negotiations] and clarify open questions," Steinmeier was quoted as saying by the German Foreign Ministry press service.
The newest round of talks between the Syrian opposition and the government representatives was initially slated for January 25. The gathering will take place in Geneva, which has already hosted two rounds of intra-Syrian negotiations.
On Friday, the United Nations Office in Geneva (UNOG) announced that the mush-anticipated talks between Damascus officials and Syrian opposition are likely to be postponed for a few days although the target date is still January 25.
