MOSCOW (Sputnik), Alexander Mosesov — The system compelling migrants in the city of Cardiff to wear colored wristbands in order to receive their meals on a daily basis has been canceled, a UK Home Office News Desk officer told Sputnik on Monday, following criticism of the system by human rights organizations.
The wristbands system came under heavy media and NGO pressure in the United Kingdom as the system was compared by its critics to the Jewish signs used in Nazi Germany.
Clearsprings Ready Homes, a UK Home Office contractor providing meals to asylum seekers in Lynx House in Cardiff, introduced the bands some three months ago. Residents of the short term accommodation had to wear them to claim breakfast, lunch and dinner.
"Clearsprings have confirmed that these bands are no longer been used," the News Desk officer said.
The wristbands are due to be replaced with photo ID cards.
UK public figures and human rights advocates criticized the wristband system, saying it made migrants vulnerable to xenophobic abuse, as many seen wearing the wristbands were subjected to verbal abuse by some members of the local population.
