WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The United States and China will work to introduce a strong UN Security Council resolution targeting North Korea’s nuclear program, US Secretary of State John Kerry told reporters on Wednesday.
"We agreed on the importance of a strong UN Security Council resolution, and we agreed to accelerate our work at the UN immediately in order to try to reach an understanding of what should be in it and how we achieve our goal," Kerry stated.
The US secretary of state delivered his remarks following a meeting with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Beijing.
Kerry noted that it is possible to take effective steps to sanction the North Korean government without punishing the people of the country.
On January 6, Pyongyang said it had successfully carried out a hydrogen bomb test, which triggered a wave of condemnation from the international community.
