VLADIVOSTOK (Sputnik) — As of January 25, there were 39 confirmed cases of the A H1N1 swine influenza virus, of which 15 were children. One patient died from pneumonia, caused by the swine flu.
"Over the past week, the A (H1N1) 2009 pandemic influenza has been laboratorily confirmed in 118 patients diagnosed with ARVI [acute respiratory viral infection]," the regional department of Russia’s public health and consumer rights watchdog Rospotrebnadzor said in a statement.
All educational institutions have been closed in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, Yelizovo and Tigilskiy districts as a quarantine was introduced.
An outbreak of swine flu, subtype H1N1 of the influenza A virus, is spreading across many regions of Russia. The H1N1 swine flu carries a higher risk of fatality in comparison to the common flu.
