WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The United States extended a travel alert to US citizens concerning travel or stay in southeastern Turkey because of the danger of terrorism in that region, the US Consulate General in Istanbul said in a travel warning on Friday.
"The US Department of State warns US citizens against travel to southeastern Turkey due to an increased threat of terrorist attacks from both international and indigenous terror groups," the warning stated.
The Consulate General also noted that terrorists have previously targeted Turkish tourist sites, as well as US government buildings, police and local authorities.
"The threat of kidnapping remains a concern, especially in the southeast, and incidents of indirect fire from Syria have impacted Turkey along the border," it added.
The new travel alert replaced an earlier travel warning issued on September 3.
