MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Internet security threats are real, but full control over the web in Russia is not on the government's agenda, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Thursday.
Earlier in the day, Russian media reported that the country's Ministry of Communications had prepared a bill on state control over Internet traffic in Russia.
"Such a big country as Russia should have the potential to compensate possible unfriendly steps aimed at bringing down the entire segments of the network. Work on this issue is certainly underway, such tasks have been set. But to interpret it as a full control over the Internet would be incorrect," the spokesman said.
In October 2014, the Russian Security Council held a meeting chaired by President Vladimir Putin on the issue, following testing of the stability of the Internet in the country and the mechanisms to prevent threats.
