KHABAROVSK (Sputnik) — Russian military in the Far Eastern Primorsky Territory are preparing to test-fire advanced Tor-M2U surface-to-air missile systems, the Eastern Military District spokesman Col. Alexander Gordeyev said Tuesday.
"Air defense artillery units of the Eastern Military District’s motorized infantry regiment, stationed in the Primorsky Territory, will test Tor-M2U missile systems for the first time in March at the specialized Telemba firing range in Buryatia," Gordeyev told reporters.
Tor-M2U (NATO reporting name SA-15 Gauntlet) surface-to-air missile systems entered service in the Primorsky Territory, bordered by China and North Korea, in 2014.
Tor-M2U is a short-range surface-to-air missile system, designed to defend key military and civilian facilities from attacks by aircraft, cruise and guided missiles, as well as drones. It can simultaneously detect more than 40 air targets and home in on up to four of them at once at a range of up to 23,000 feet and at altitudes of almost 20,000 feet.
