Havana is ready to discuss any topic with Washington during US president Barack Obama's visit to Cuba in March, including the issue of human rights, Josefina Vidal, director of US affairs for the Cuban Foreign Ministry, said on Thursday.

MONTEVIDEO (Sputnik) — Earlier in the day, the White House said Obama was scheduled to visit Cuba on March 21-22 in a first US official visit since 1928.

"Cuba is open to speak to the US government about any topic, including human rights," Vidal told reporters after the White House's announcement.

She noted that the two countries have "different understanding of various issues," however, engage in the dialogue on them on the basis of respect, equality, reciprocity and non-interference.

Relations between the United States and Cuba started to improve after Obama announced in December 2014 a historic U-turn in the US policy to include loosening of the trade and travel embargo on Havana. The two countries reopened embassies in their respective capitals in the summer of 2015, after more than 50 years of diplomatic non-engagement.
