WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — US President Barack Obama will visit Cuba and Argentina in March to enhance collaboration between the two countries in trade, energy and security, the White House announced in a statement on Thursday.
“President Obama and the First Lady will travel to Cuba on March 21st and 22nd and Argentina on March 23rd and 24th,” the statement said. “The President will deepen efforts to increase cooperation between our governments in a range of areas, including trade and investment, renewable energy and climate change, and citizen security.”
In December 2014, US President Barack Obama announced the United States would normalize relations with Cuba. The two countries reopened embassies in their respective capitals in July 2015 after more than 50 years of non-engagement. Despite the rapprochement between the two countries, Washington continues to maintain a trade embargo on Havana that is mandated by the US Congress.
