MOSCOW (Sputnik) — According to the B92 television channel, 69 lawmakers voted in favor of the measure and five were against it in a vote that took place late Monday
"The measure does not imply that the army has the right to take military action, but to provide assistance to the police in tasks of guarding the border," Miro Cerar said, as quoted by the media outlet.
The decision is a "natural step in the circumstances," Cerar claimed.
Europe has faced an enormous influx of migrants fleeing war and poverty in the Middle East and Africa. Many refugees use transit routes through the Balkans to reach more prosperous countries in Western Europe.
EU border agency Frontex recorded over 1.83 million illegal border crossings into the European Union in 2015.
