VIENNA (Sputnik) — According to Mikl-Leitner, Berlin is implementing an open-door refugee policy, but at the same time it demands Vienna decrease the transit quotas for refugees traveling through Austria's territory.
"Germany should decide what message it wants to send… [Germany] should decide on one strategy," Mikl-Leitner said.
The minister said she hoped that EU nations would make one more "step forward" to solving the migrant crisis at the meeting of the EU interior ministers on February 25.
Germany has become a key destination for hundreds of thousands of refugees and immigrants fleeing war and poverty in the Middle East and North Africa since the start of 2015. The majority of some 1.1 million refugees that arrived in Germany used Austria as a transit route despite Vienna's attempts to limit the migrant flow.
