ATHENS (Sputnik) — The Greek Foreign Ministry delivered a note of protest to Austria on Wednesday in light of Vienna hosting a ministerial conference on refugees with the participation of Western Balkan states, but in the absence of Athens.

"By the decision of Foreign Minister Nikos Kotzias, Greece’s Ambassador to Vienna [Chryssoula] Aliferi is summoned to Athens for consultations aimed at preserving the friendly relations between the states and the people of Greece and Austria," the statement read.

The ministry said it was "clear that the big problems of the European Union cannot be dealt with thoughts, mentalities and extra-institutional initiatives that have their roots in the 19th century."

Athens said that unilateral initiatives to address the problem of refugees could undermine the foundations and the processes of the European integration.
