ZURICH (Sputnik) — FIFA member associations approved on Friday a package of landmark reforms aimed at major improvements in the football governing body, including reforms on decision-making, human rights' aspects and monitoring of the activity of FIFA senior officials.
The Extraordinary FIFA Congress is currently underway in Zurich, with one of its aims being the election of the new FIFA president.
"This will create a system of stronger governance and greater diversity that will give football a strong foundation on which to thrive. It will help to restore trust in our organization. And it will deter future wrongdoing," acting FIFA President Issa Hayatou said in a statement.
The reforms include separation between political and management functions of the FIFA Council, FIFA presidency term limits, stricter supervision during the Council members' elections, and enhanced control for money flows within the body.
