Deputy Sheriff of Mason County Ryan Spurling said earlier that the killed children may have stemmed from Kazakhstan, while the county's Coroner Jane Pentz told Sputnik that, according to police, the boys were of Russian nationality.
According to Reeber, the US department of state is attempting to determine the boys’ nationality.
“We will work with the consulate from whatever the country they turn out to be originally from,” the official said.
Kazakhstan’s Foreign Ministry is also looking into reports that the two boys were adopted from this Central Asian country, a ministry spokesman said Saturday.
"We are now checking this information," the ministry’s spokesman Anuar Zhainakov told RIA Novosti.
A total of five people died Friday in a shooting at a home close to the community of Belfair. A man reportedly killed a woman, two children and then shot himself.
