Ukraine has filed with the London High Court an acknowledgment of service in regard to the lawsuit filed by Russia against Ukraine over Kiev's $3 billion debt, the country's Finance Ministry said in a statement on Thursday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Last month, Moscow had filed a lawsuit against Kiev on Ukraine's debt, demanding to pay back the Eurobond's $3-billion principal and unpaid $75-million December 2015 coupon, as well as interest starting from December 20, 2015 — the bond's maturity date.

"Ukraine has today filed with the English High Court its acknowledgment of service indicating its intention to defend all of the claim brought against it by The Law Debenture Trust Corporation Plc relating to the alleged Russian debt," the statement reads.

The ministry added that Ukraine reconfirmed its intention to "vigorously" defend its interest at the court and hired Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan litigation firm to represent Ukraine in the proceedings.

The debt was secured by former Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych's government in late 2013. Russia has repeatedly stated that Ukraine's failure to pay back the debt by the December 20 deadline should be classified as a default.
