CAIRO (Sputnik) – The High Negotiations Committee (HNC) Syrian opposition group has not yet decided whether it would take part in the upcoming negotiations in Geneva, HNC spokesman Riad Naasan Agha said Saturday.
On Tuesday, UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura "penciled" March 9 as the start of indirect negotiations between Syrian government and opposition delegates. He later told Arab media the talks were expected to officially kick off on March 10.
"We have not yet decided to participate in the Geneva talks. The HNC is examining the position. There are attempts by the international community to consolidate the ceasefire and carry out other solutions," Agha told RIA Novosti.
Russia and the United States reached a deal on the cessation of hostilities in Syria on February 22. It has largely held since taking effect on February 27.
The current ceasefire enforced in Syria does not apply to groups designated by the United Nations to be terrorist organizations, such as Islamic State (IS) and the Nusra Front, outlawed in a number of countries worldwide including Russia.
