ANKARA (Sputnik) — At least one Turkish soldier and 10 militants of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) were killed in armed clashes in country's southeastern provinces, the Turkish General Staff said in a statement Monday.
"During the operation against the separatist terror organization [PKK] in the Sur district of Diyarbakır city, one our comrade suffered a severe wound and died in a hospital. Yesterday four terrorists were killed in Sur and six in [town of] Idil of Sirnak province," the statement reads.
Turkey's Kurdish-dominated southeast region has recently seen renewed violence between the Turkish government forces and the PKK since the mid-summer breakdown of a two-year peace process.
In July, Ankara initiated a military operation against the PKK in response to the escalation of attacks in southern Turkey. According to the General Staff, more than 1,000 PKK militants were killed in the last three months.
