The West African hotel suffered for the third time since November by similar incidents at hotels all of which included killings. Mali's Radisson hotel was attacked by al-Qaeda affiliated militants who left 20 tourists and civilians dead. The group's main target is allies of France as it pledged to carry on attacks and didn't stop at an assault in Burkina Farso in February.
"In a message posted on its Telegram channels on March 13, 2016, the group reported that three `heroes' from its group were able to storm the resort," according to the SITE Intelligence Group, which monitors online communications by militant groups.
According to different sources, AQIM killed at least 14 civilians, 6 militants and two soldiers in the recent attack.
