BEIJING (Sputnik) — China wants all parties involved in the crisis on the Korean Peninsula to show restraint and caution to prevent an escalation of tension in the region, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lu Kang said at a briefing Tuesday.
In the past week, tensions on the Korean Peninsula have increased with the United States and South Korea conducting military drills and North Korea firing a number of short and medium-range rockets toward the Sea of Japan, as well as threatening to carry out more nuclear tests.
"We urge relevant parties to earnestly implement Security Council resolutions, mind their words and actions, and refrain from aggravating tensions [on the Korean peninsula]," Lu was quoted as saying on the ministry's website.
Earlier in March, the UN Security Council introduced new sanctions against North Korea in response to Pyongyang conducting a hydrogen bomb test in January, as well as the launch of a long-range rocket to allegedly place a satellite into orbit in February.
