WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Work on the contract will be performed at Tucson and is expected to be completed by February 28, 2019.
“Raytheon Co., Tucson, Arizona, has been awarded a $573 million modification on [a] previously awarded contract… [to] provide Advanced Medium Range Air to Air Missile (AMRAAM) production Lot 30 and other AMRAAM system items,” the announcement stated on Wednesday.
The AMRAAM missiles have been ordered by both the US Navy and the US Air Force, the Defense Department noted.
Air-to-air missiles are regarded as essential for US combat aircraft expected to contest air supremacy over battle zones with the air forces of major nations.
The US Air Force and Navy have sought to expand their inventories of such weapons before being required to carry out such operations.
