The United States and Russia should emphasize the importance of giving the Kurds a place at the table in Geneva to participate in the intra-Syrian peace talks, Kurdish Peoples' Democratic Party representative to the United States, Mehmet Yuksel, told Sputnik.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Kurdish political representatives have been excluded from the UN-brokered negotiations between the Syrian government and opposition groups taking place in Geneva, Switzerland this week.

"We believe that both the US and Russian governments vehemently need to stress the importance of the Kurdish participation in Geneva talks," Yuksel stated on Thursday.

Yuksel noted that Kurdish representation in Geneva is critical given that the Kurds have been a key and relentless actor in fighting terrorist groups in Syria.

The exclusion of the Kurdish representation in Geneva, Yuksel added, has direct ties with the intervention of the Turkish government.

Ankara has successfully blocked Syrian Kurds from participating in peace talks in Geneva, claiming they have ties to the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK). The PKK, which Turkey considers to be a terrorist organization, seeks to create a Kurdish state in parts of Turkey and Iraq.
