MOSCOW (Sputnik) — On Saturday, Assad held a meeting with Kamal Kharrazi, the head of the Strategic Council on Foreign Relations of the Iranian Supreme Leader’s Administration.
During this meeting in Damascus, Assad said that the victory of the Syrian people and their allies in the war against terrorism would help to establish a more balanced and fair world, as quoted by the SANA news agency.
According to the president, the Western countries are still trying to impose their political will to the Syrian people, which contradicts the Syrians' interests.
During the meeting the sides focused on the recent cessation of hostilities in Syria and the current intra-Syrian talks in Geneva, aiming to find a political solution of the crisis.
Syria has been mired in civil war since 2011, with government forces loyal to president Assad fighting against numerous opposition factions, including the Western-backed, so-called "moderate" opposition, as well as extremist groups, such as Daesh and Jabhat al-Nusra (Nusra Front) outlawed in a number of countries worldwide including Russia.
Earlier in March, Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered the withdrawal of the main contingent of Russian forces from Syria after a five-month aerial operation against terrorists in the country, stating that they had accomplished their mission.
The intra-Syrian talks to settle the five-year civil war in Syria were resumed in Geneva, Switzerland, on March 14.
