MOSCOW (Sputnik) – Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Oleg Syromolotov and French Ambassador to Russia Jean-Maurice Ripert discussed on Monday possible ways to cooperate in the fight against the Daesh jihadist group, the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
"During the meeting, particular emphasis was put on the prospects of Russian-French cooperation in countering terrorist threats in the context of Daesh and curbing the financing of terrorist activities," the statement reads.
The diplomats also touched upon terrorist threats in a number of European and Asian regions.
Daesh, outlawed in a number of countries worldwide, including Russia, controls large territories in Syria and Iraq, spreading its influence to North Africa and other regions.
France is part of the US-led coalition that has been carrying out a campaign against Daesh in Syria and Iraq since 2014. Last week, Russia finished its separate 5.5-month aerial campaign in Syria, conducted at the request of Syrian President Bashar Assad.
