WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — US forces have eliminated two enemy combatants who engaged in small arms fire with the newly established firebase in northern Iraq, Operation Inherent Resolve spokesman Col. Steve Warren told reporters on Monday.
"There was some small arms fire this morning, ineffective," Warren stated. "It appeared to be focused more on…the larger base nearby. Two enemies killed in that operation."
During the press briefing, Warren confirmed that the US military established a new firebase in northern Iraq to support Iraqi forces in liberating the city of Mosul from the Islamic State, also known as Daesh terrorists.
The Islamic State, also known by its Arab acronym Daesh, is a designated terrorist group that has taken large areas of land in Iraq and Syria, where it proclaimed a caliphate. The terror group is outlawed in the United States, Russia and in several other countries.
