GENEVA (Sputnik) — A future Syrian transitional governing body may set up a loya jirga, a grand council of elders, which would guarantee equal rights of the Syrian people, the head of the Syrian opposition's High Negotiations Committee (HNC) delegation to the Geneva proximity talks told reporters Tuesday.
"The Syrian people have always insisted on the UN resolutions, on a transitional governing body with full powers. This transitional governing body, once it is set up, will set up the Loya Jirga…. It will provide the guarantees of equal rights to all the Syrians," Asaad Zoubi said.
The latest round of negotiations between the Syrian government and opposition forces kicked off on March 14 in Geneva and is due to recess on Thursday, March 24.
The proximity talks center around a transitional political process for Syria, which has been in a state of civil war since 2011. The Saudi-backed HNC wants to see the establishment of a transitional governing body with full executive powers, while the government considers this unacceptable.
