GENEVA (Sputnik) — The Syrian opposition's High Negotiations Committee (HNC) on Tuesday submitted a number of papers with proposals on political transition in Syria, the release of detainees and the lifting of sieges to UN Special Envoy Staffan De Mistura, HNC delegation head Asaad Zoubi said.
"Today our meeting was fruitful, we submitted a number of papers. One of them was on procedural issues, another — on detainees, and on the lifting of sieges… We also submitted a very important paper on the fundamental elements for a political transition in Syria," Zoubi told reporters after holding a meeting with de Mistura.
The latest round of negotiations between the Syrian government and opposition forces kicked off on March 14 and is due to recess on Thursday, March 24.
The proximity talks center around a transitional political process for Syria, which has been in a state of civil war since 2011. The HNC wants to see the establishment of a transitional governing body with full executive powers, while the government considers this unacceptable.
