HAVANA (Sputnik) — The address by US President Barack Obama to the Cuban people delivered on Monday in Havana is a speech of hope, US Senator Patrick Leahy told Sputnik on Tuesday.
"It's a speech of hope," Leahy said. "I am so happy to be here."
On Monday, Obama addressed the Cuban people during his two-day visit to the island nation, which is a first such trip by a sitting US president since 1928.
When asked how Obama’s visit will contribute to the ongoing process of normalizing relations between the two countries, Leahy said, "We are moving quickly. It will be a lot different three years from now than what it is now, but there will always be an improvement."
Obama gave his address at the Gran Teatro Alicia Alonso in a gathering attended by Cuban President Raul Castro, Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez, Minister of Foreign Trade Rodrigo Malmierca Diaz as well as renowned Cuban ballerina Alicia Alonso after whom the theater is named.
