Much at Stake: Who Will Define Syria’s Future After Peace Talks Stalemate
MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Last week, UN Envoy for Syria Staffan De Mistura defined 12 points on which the parties to the Syrian peace talks in Geneva could agree and submitted the document to them for approval. De Mistura suggested that all parties to the intra-Syrian talks should agree that Syria will be a democratic, non-sectarian state.

"The transition from indirect to direct talks must take place after the creation of unified opposition," Lebanese Al Mayadeen television cited Jaafari, who heads the Syrian government delegation at Syria proximity talks, as saying.

Earlier in the day, a representative of the Moscow-Cairo opposition group said that parts of the Syrian opposition are not ready for direct negotiations with the country's government.

The next round of talks between government and several opposition delegations is expected in April.
