MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Daesh, banned in Russia and several other countries, might carry out new chemical attacks after suffering military defeats, the Russian Foreign Ministry said Tuesday.
"The military defeats can push IS to desperate measures, including massive use of chemical weapons in the hope to restore the balance on the battlefield," Director of the Russian Foreign Ministry Department for Non-Proliferation and Arms Control Mikhail Ulyanov said.
"To counteract the current chemical threats from IS we need to use other tools, primarily through the UN Security Council [UNSC]," Ulyanov said, adding that there is a resistance from some of Russia's Western partners who want to focus all the attention of UNSC on the official Syrian government and not on Daesh.
