MOSCOW (Sputnik) – The downing of a Russian Su-24 jet by Ankara in November was “unexpected and totally incomprehensible,” Austrian President Heinz Fischer said Wednesday after a meeting with Russian leader Vladimir Putin.
Fischer arrived in Moscow on Tuesday on an official visit at Putin’s invitation.
"We asked the president about Russia's relations with Turkey as a result of the unexpected and completely incomprehensible actions that were carried out by Turkey, which downed a Russian plane, and we got a lot of information on this issue," Fischer said.
Relations between Russia and Turkey have been strained since Ankara shot down a Russian Su-24 military aircraft on an anti-terrorist mission in Syria saying that the fighter jet allegedly violated Turkish airspace. Russia has denied allegations and imposed a set of economic measures against Turkey in retaliation.
