"The tech sector can help, and is helping with providing an alternate message to the message of the Islamic State and al-Qaeda and others," Johnson stated at the Countering Violent Extremism Symposium in Washington, DC.
Technology companies are also becoming more active in taking down terrorist content on the internet, Johnson noted, adding that the job is "difficult" and "complex" given the nature of the technology.
In February, Twitter announced it had suspended 125,000 accounts that were promoting terrorism or were directly related to the Islamic State terror group. The promotion of violence or terrorism is an explicit violation of the terms of use of Twitter.
Facebook, which has more than 1.6 billion users worldwide, is also taking steps to remove terrorist-linked profiles from their platform.
